Iditarod 2005     Drop Bags...

Drop Bags

The Iditaord supplies the drop bags, which must contain at least 60 pounds of gear per checkpoint. The majoirty of that weight is dry dog food and meat.

Drop Bag Layout

Both Ed and Andrew's bags are organized according to checkpoints.

Yes, there is a town of Iditarod!

Meat!!

We sent in over 1600 pounds of beef for the dogs. All of it had to be sliced into 1/2 inch pieces before being put into 8 pound bags.

What A Mess!

The entire house was pretty much a disaster for three days. Booties, runner plastic, socks, pants, underwear, batteries, kleenex, dog jackets, foot ointment, and harnesses were spread out everywhere!

YMMM!! Human Food

Ed's parents and Andrew's parents prepared all the meals for the guys ahead of time. Things like beef stew, spaghetti, tuna casserole, halibut, shrimp pasta, lasanga, pumpkin pie, cheesecake, and cookies were all vaccum sealed and packed with mother's love!

IGA

The local IGA was gracious enough to allow us to use their giant freezer to get the meat extra frozen before packing it into the boxes for transport.

Final Preparation

Each bag was carefully packed, checked, re-packed, and sealed for delivery to the 20 checkpoints from Anchorage to Nome.

Away it goes!

All the drop bags were packed into three 48"x40"x6' insulated boxes and put on a truck headed to Seattle, WA from where it will be shipped by barge to Anchorage, AK, and then will be loaded onto bush planes to head across the interior of Alaska.
