What do you do with the old dogs when they retire?????

Here's a glimpse into the "other" lives of ex-Nature's Kennel sled dogs...

(Are you an owner of an ex-Nature's Kennel sled dog?  If so, we'd love to hear from you--send us an update and photos so we can add you to the list!)

Ruby--Birmingham, AL

"Ruby might be the dog farthest south, Birmingham, AL. Ruby is doing really well. She loves to be outside. She likes to sit on

the back deck and "protect" the house. Her picture is on the computer in my classroom and my students love to hear about her."--Jessica Bryant (Note: Jessica has been one of our most patient dog owners...she adopted Ruby as a wild puppy!!)

Mouse-Wausau, WI

"Cliff told me you were looking for some new pictures of Mouse – because he looked a little sad in the one I sent you. He really doesn’t like the little grey box pointed at him for some reason..."--Darlene Henning

Mouse and Mickey--Wausau, WI

Mouse and Mick are always a bit camera shy, I guess they have better things to do than pose for pictures!

Stratus and Lucy--Billings, MT

"Stratus and Lucy (note: Lucy is a sister to Lady Bird, Martha, George, and Hoover who are here at Nature's Kennel) have been spending a lot of time on the Beartooth Pass. We have been playing ball and frisbee. We call it cross-training but mostly we are trying to wear them out. The Busch family motto is : Tired Dogs are Good Dogs".--Kim and Bryan Busch

Stratus--the sled dog turned frisbee dog!!--Billings, MT

Paige, Tornado, Elasti, Zip, Monte, and Munster--Goodrich, MI

"This is my 6 dog team from two years ago; Paige and Tornado are in lead, Elasti and Zip are in the middle and of course Monte & Munster are in wheel."--Joe Gutowski (all dogs are formerly Nature's Kennel dogs, and are now Joe's kids!

Paige, Oz, Munster (with dish), and Monte--Goodrich, MI

"Munster stole the rubber feed bowl from one of the horses and to this day he will not give it back. He runs around the yard with it all of the time. None of the other dogs touch it because it is too heavy for them to carry; when Munster runs with it his back legs come off of the ground."--Joe Gutowski

Gretzky--Tapiola, MI

"Crazy as ever, a great test of patience, but probably the most affectionate of our dogs and tries really hard to please. He'll do anything for you except be quiet."--Gary

Robi--Tapiola, MI

"I think a really cool looking dog, great personality and did well this spring."--Gary

Violet--Tapiola, MI

"A machine, pretty incredible dog...best I've ever had the chance to work with (haven't worked with sled dogs that long [5 years], but I was amazed no less)."--Gary

Michigan--Tapiola, MI

"Kind of a clown and very happy-go-lucky, pulls like a horse and also as we've come to find out (not on purpose) a really great mother."--Gary Kaunonen

KaBluwie--Tapiola, MI

One of the Michigan surprise babies!

Karhu--Tapiola, MI

Another of Michigan's surprises!

Musta--Tapiola, MI

The third surprise from Michigan!

Dog Travel of the Future

This sure beats the 8 MPG Nature's Kennel Dog Truck! Cliff and Diane Henning have masterminded fuel efficient dog trucks!!

Hiccup-Wausau, WI

Hiccup is still well, Hiccup! She spends most of her time persuading Mark to give her treats and Darlene to scratch her belly!

Mickey--Wausau, WI

Mickey loves doggie heaven with Darlene Henning.

Mouse-Wausau, WI

Mouse loves the cool shade at Darlene and Mark's house.

Willow--Freda, MI

Willow loves her new friend Jesse, the couch, and her home along Lake Superior with Mike and Cathy Benda.

Badger--summer residence in Fort Wayne, IN

Badger is spending his summer with Michele Seng in Fort Wayne, IN...is that carpet under his head?? He'd better not get too used to that!!

Butter--Frankenmuth, MI

"Butter has been doing great...she stays near off-lead, obeys commands well and is very affectionate. We couldn't be more happy with her. As this photo indicates, she fits into the family life pretty easily."--Kli and Alan

Canelo (formerly known as Hellboy)--Washington DC

"He’s doing really well. Gotten a little pudgy, learned to eat a lot of things like shoes, purses, stuffed animals, random Tupperware, and a wooden rabbit sculpture that has been in my living room for a while and now has three legs, one ear, and half a face. I don’t know what he liked about it, but at this point we just keep it in there so he has that to gnaw on and doesn’t move on to, say, the television."--Isabel Kaldenbach

Cello--Lowell, MI

"Cello is doing great!Over the past couple months she's been hiking and camping with us all over the Lower Peninsula in Michigan and in May we spent a week in West Virginia backpacking and fly fishing. Her day-to-day life here in Lowell usually consists of either going on a trail run with me and our other dogs or occasionally swimming in the Flat River. ...at the local dog park, Cello acts like a little energizer bunny and tries to get all the fat house dogs to chase her (with no hope of ever being caught - she's supper fast). She has a beautiful looking run and we get lots of compliments on her."--Matt Rowbotham

Fir--Duluth, MN

"I figured it was time to say hi, and to give you an update on Fir--my favorite dog ever!! He has become a sailing-dog, a running buddy, a party regular, and most of all a cuddly "bed-dog"."--Sierra Jefferson (Note: Fir is now 9 years old, and was given to Sierra when he was a young pup!)

Flood--Fort Wayne IN

I could not resist including this photo of Flood taking care of the car while his owner, Michele, went shopping!

Kim's Awesome Team!! --Union City, PA

"Retirement home????? Sakic?? No-way. . . hahahaha. At this time of year in PA, the dogs just get free run at this point due our heat and humidity. I turn them all loose almost everyday. Here is a pic of my 8 dog team that includes 6 dogs from your kennel. Sisu & Purple, Claudia & Honey-Comb, Sky & Kobuck, Twister & Sakic."--Kim Ward

Honeycomb and Claudia--Union City, PA

We are often asked about two of the kennel favorites, Claudia and Honeycomb...they are now all-stars at their new home!

Noel and Noir--Duluth MN

Noel and Noir are two of the very few puppies we have ever sold...

"They have been running about 8 miles a day, nonstop

Noir pulls me on the bike ever other day.

Noel barks at ever dog she sees.

Noel is also a whiner.

Noir and Noel have already learned their names, sit, stay, and are working on come."--Jeff Bush

Noel and Noir and the Bush Family--Duluth, MN

Ontairo--Belding, MI

Tasha's parents delivered Ontario to his new home with the Rousseau family in Belding. He loved getting his own seat in the van instead of riding in a dog box!

Pooh--Brutus, MI

Dave and Lori Schiller fell in love with Pooh after meeting him at Boyne Highlands this winter, Pooh loves retirement--he savored his last patch of snow in the back yard as long as he could!!

Sage, Patrick, and Razzle--Cleveland, WI

"Living with the dogs is great. They seem to like the new home, although they are not all fond of the house. We had some severe weather here last week and when they spotted some funnel clouds just west of here me, Diane and all 5 dogs went downstairs in the basement. Needless to say it was a new experience for the dogs. Razzle and Sage really did not want to go in the basement and were nervous the whole time. Patrick however walked downstairs and laid down."--Cliff Henning

Sage--Cleveland, WI

"The dogs are running in front of the bike well. I'm running all three now through the woods. The trail is give or take 10 ft wide and has a lot of corners. It is set up kinda like a grid, so I can do a lot of turns and double back and such. All three dogs are doing well with the commands."--Cliff Henning (crazy man who enjoys bikejoring with sled dogs!)

Santa--Westerville, OH

"He is now up to 35 lbs, but still seems pretty small in size. I am hoping he grows more! He is getting better about not chewing on walls, but still has his moments. He knows how to open cabinets and LOVES to counter surf! His favorite place to sleep is on top of his crate..."--Erin Ramirez

Skip--Mishawaka, IN

There are far too many "Skip" stories to share, but here's glimpse into Skip's World: "He still hates the really hot weather, thankfully it hasn't been unbearably hot, though it's been quite humid. He caught a bird the other day. The bird and his buddies were hunting worms in the back yard and Skip caught one as he tried to fly up to the fence for safety. Thankfully we caught him in the act, so he didn't get to bat it around like a piece of rawhide. I think he has successfully chased ALL of the rabbits out of the backyard. There were a few babies who didn't know any better, and he actually stood on the deck glaring at them (as they weren't moving), thankfully we were able to get inside before they ran away ... it's been like Animal Planet lately!"--Megan Berlo

Stratus--Billings, MT

Need we say more...

Ol' Man Trapper--summer residence in Fort Wayne, IN

Yes, 17 year old Trapper is still alive, well, and loving "real" bones from Michele!!

Kix--Port Huron, MI

"Kix went this week to get "fixed". He did very well except for the whole not running for 10 days that may kill him yet. We walk him three times a week and my husband is training for a marathon so Kix is his running partner. Tonight when my husband left to go train Kix laid by the door and cried/ howled it really was the saddest thing I have ever seen."--Britt Pionk
